Coping with Conversations

Green means go, red means stop. Yet, in conversations (whether casual or serious), nothing ever reads as clear as “keep talking” or “this discussion has ended.” I see the possibilities of the words being said: “I could learn more about a topic.” “I could answer questions.” “I could make someone laugh.” But I almost completely clueless as to what the other person is thinking or intonating. I run through my memorized scripts faster than people can recite the ABCs, and when I use the scripts wrong, I worry that I’ve offended someone or miscommunicated. Then I remember that I know lots of fun, quirky, and eccentric people who aren’t on the autism spectrum, who people find interesting, who enjoy conversations. When I remember that, I feel a bit more liberated.
