Seeking a Professional Diagnosis

Many autistic adults are seeking professional diagnoses. However, adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and especially women, are the least likely to receive a diagnosis when they go see a psychologist. Here are a few ideas, based on my personal experience, that may help you along the way:
1) Ask around. Request to know before making an appointment with any psychologist if they are familiar with autistic girls and women. If not, ask the psychologist if they could provide a recommendation to someone that they believe might be familiar with autistic women.
2) Save up. Most likely, the autism specialist you find will not accept your insurance. Wait until you have enough money to see them, and ask if they have payment options to ease the financial burden.
3) Bring a notebook. I actually brought in a three-ring binder full of resources about ASD traits for women, as well as my personal expression of each of those traits.
