I have no idea when someone likes a gift I’ve given them. The truth is, individuals on the spectrum cannot read body language and social cues. As a result, many of us have been conditioned to assume the worse in order to protect ourselves from potential backlash. But it’s the holidays! We all know the saying, “It’s the thought that counts.” Yet, when I watch someone open a gift, I am sometimes filled with dread.
To cope with this anxiety, we can include gift receipts. The gift receipt allows the recipient to return the gift if they so choose, and it can alleviate the giver’s guilt and anxiety spiralling. Just be sure to forgo offense if someone returns your gift. I mean, hey, then you gave them money. Sometimes that’s the best gift of all during this expensive time of year!
