Many autistic people are tired of not getting enough sleep. Sleep is vital to coping with a society built around neurotypical (and not neurodiverse needs). When we’re tired, we’re more prone to meltdowns, shutdowns, and executive functioning struggles.
So, when Team I Blends reached out, offering me an opportunity to try their Restore powder, I decided to give it a shot. Restore is a blend of Vitamin C, Magnesium, and Calcium. Together, it promotes relaxation, calm, and restorative sleep.
I started taking the powder today. So far, I can say that the powder dissolves easily in warm water and tastes orange-y and sweet (thanks to Stevia). I was a little uptight this morning due to a rushed schedule, but about thirty minutes after drinking this, I felt a lot more relaxed.
In the meantime, I did my research on exactly how these vitamins and minerals promote healthy rest:
1) Magnesium can calm us and also improve fatigue and muscle weakness. This may help autistic people that feel irritable and, for those like me, with comorbid muscular pain.
2) Calcium helps the brain produce melatonin, which supports sleep. Many autistic people are wary of gluten and dairy, but eliminating those food groups can lead to calcium deficiencies.
3) Vitamin C supports the production of dopamine, which can help autistic people as we fight off the daily stresses of navigating a neurotypical world. Too little Vitamin C has also been linked to sleep disturbances, like waking up throughout the night.
