Frozen Empathy

Frozen. That’s how I often feel when another person is emotional (be they sad, scared, or angry). It’s not that I don’t care, but that I get caught up in making sure I react correctly. Do I look sad enough? Is it the appropriate thing to pat their arm? So, what I do is mostly listen, store the information, and talk to the person after I’ve processed it all. Many people appreciate the unexpected follow-up.
